Monday meetup – Favourite quilting tools or gadgets

Sydney Modern Quilt Guild has two meetings per month. A full day of sewing happens on our Sewing Sundays from 10am-4pm, but what goes on at Monday MeetUp you ask? We meet at the same club, Dooleys Waterview Club and have a table booked from 7pm. There is the opportunity to have dinner, or just cake and coffee or tea, as people make their way in for a 7.30 start. There is always plenty of conversation, laughter and handsewing. Generally there is a topic for discussion. You can sit and listen, or jump in with your own tidbits. The March Monday MeetUp topic was your “Favourite quilting tools or gadgets”. There were many ideas that were shared including some novel uses for objects unrelated to the usual quilting notions. This ingenious little device was shown to us by Jodi - a first time visitor. It’s a “snippit” a gadget from Canada for opening plastic milk pouches. The cleverly concealed blade is perfect for snipping threads...

Sunday Sewalongs and Monday Meetings 2015

We'll be having our February Sunday Sewalong this Sunday, 8th February from 10am to 4pm. At this meeting we will be sewing our red and white blocks to make a group quilt for the Quilters Guild of NSW Challenge later in the year. Sunday meetings take place in a private room at Dooleys Waterview and you may bring your sewing machine and equipment. The committee will also be having a brief meeting from 11:30am. MQG Riley Blake Challenge!

One of the wonderful benefits of joining our guild is that we are affiliated with The Modern Quilt Guild, and by joining, you also gain membership to the modern Quilt Guild in the states, which connects us to other guilds and provides discounts on MQG shows (including discounts and special offers from MQG sponsors). Last year, MQG an Riley Blake teamed up to create a wonderful competition open to all MQG members called the Modern Quilt Guild Riley Blake Challenge. Our guild decided to both participate in the competition, and make it interesting within our guild by creating a mini challenge. The rules were: Produce a a 24'' mini quilt, using ALL of the Riley Blake fabrics provided, and any solid of your choosing. The due date for our challenge quilts is Sunday the 16th of February, which happens to coincide with our Sunday Sit n Sew day! Hello all! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year. We now have confirmed our Sunday Sewalong dates for the first half of the year, and our Monday Meetups for the full year. Sunday Sewalong Dates: February 16, Function Room March 9, Function Room April 13, Boardroom May 18, Boardroom June 15, Boardroom We were unable to secure the boardroom for the full 6 months, but Dooley's had the function room available to us for the first two dates at the same price. The function room is located to your right, just as you enter the reception area. I'm pleased to let you know the Monday Meetup schedule for the next few months. Monday 18 February Monday 18 March Monday 22 April Monday 27 May And yep, our first Monday Meetup is just next week on 18th February! You'll find us at the tables in an alcove off the main dining area of Dooley's, just outside the Board Room. There is no cost for this meeting. With the start of a brand new year, I'd like to talk about some of the interesting things we could do this year as a group, to keep us challenged and sewing! Come along with any ideas that you might have! You should know that until new 'leaders' are organised, there may not be a 'leader' at the Monday Meetups. It's that time again! Our October Monday Meetup managed to sneak up on us! We're meeting again on October 22nd at Dooley's Waterview. You'll find all of the details in the Events section of our Facebook group. This month, our theme is my favourite pattern. We're asking members to bring a long a pattern they love. It can be any pattern - something they've made, something they'd like to make, something in a book. Any pattern that they'd like to talk about! We like to keep things open and see where the conversation takes us. Last month, it took us all the way to Europe as we talked about gorgeous thread. We're pleased to let you know the Monday Meetup schedule for the remainder of 2012. Grab your pencils permanent markers and put these dates into your calendar! Recap: Our First Meetup

This recap of our first meeting is a bit longer than most will be. We passed along quite a bit of general guild information and want to make sure that those who couldn't attend understand how the guild is structured. Can you believe it?! Our first meetup had 22 people in attendance! It all kicked off at Dooley's Waterside at 7pm with a bit of chitchat and getting to know each other. Food was eaten, beers went down easily and the coffee was given high marks. The board room made for a great private space to kickstart The Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild. Sheridan kicked off the meeting off by introducing the organizing committee and explained the roles each committee member is tackling. As of yet, we haven't given ourselves official titles or launched into elections. Once we understand the needs of the guild, we'll revisit positions more formally. Our first Monday Meetup!

Our first meeting will be a Monday Meetup. As described in our intro post, Monday Meetups are your chance to come and chat about all things Modern Quilting. You get to connect with other quilters in the community, as well as having an opportunity to 'Show and Tell' some of your current projects. As this is our first meeting, it's also an opportunity to provide input about what you'd like to get out of the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild. For the first meetup, we've booked a private space in The Boardroom at Dooley's Waterview in Silverwater. This venue will allow us a quiet space to discuss ideas and get the group rolling.
