MQG Riley Blake Challenge!

One of the wonderful benefits of joining our guild is that we are affiliated with The Modern Quilt Guild, and by joining, you also gain membership to the modern Quilt Guild in the states, which connects us to other guilds and provides discounts on MQG shows (including discounts and special offers from MQG sponsors). Last year, MQG an Riley Blake teamed up to create a wonderful competition open to all MQG members called the Modern Quilt Guild Riley Blake Challenge. Our guild decided to both participate in the competition, and make it interesting within our guild by creating a mini challenge. The rules were:

  • Produce a a 24” mini quilt, using ALL of the Riley Blake fabrics provided, and any solid of your choosing.

The due date for our challenge quilts is Sunday the 16th of February, which happens to coincide with our Sunday Sit n Sew day! The categories are as follows:

1) Best use of the Riley Blake challenge fabrics
2) Best use of quilting
3) Best piecing and construction techniques
4) Members’ choice award
5) Best use of every scrap of fabric

We have some wonderful prizes that were generously donated by local quilt shops Kim Bradley Creations, Kate Quilts,  PolkaDot Tea Fabrics, and Quilt Jane, as well as prizes thrown in by guild members. We are so lucky to have access to such wonderful shops, so please remember to buy local and give your support to the wonderful  Aussie quilting community!

Sarah Fielke has also thrown in a generous prize that includes a copy of her book Hand Quilted with Love (available at Kim Bradley Creations!), and a bundle of fabric. She would like to pick the quilt she likes the best.

The finished quilts must be uploaded onto the MQG Riley Blake forum, via the MQG community site by the 17th of February this year. I’m aware that not everyone is up to speed with technology, so I have a little tutorial on how to upload your finished quilt!

First of all, you must make an account with the MQG. Link is here. Once you’re logged in, you can click through to the community stuff. The community area is located at the top of the MQG page, or just click on this link, which will take you straight through to the Riley Blake forum. To go in the running to win with the MQG, you must enter a picture of your finished quilt into the forum titled FINISHED Riley Blake challenge photos. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, until you see the comment box. In the comment box at the far right, you’ll see a tiny icon of a mountain. Click on it to upload your photo, then follow the instructions.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 4.53.04 pm

Once you’ve submitted the photo into the comment box, you can simply click the Post button, but I think it might be nice to mention that you’re a member of GWSMQG, how big the quilt is, and what solids you used. I hope this mini tutorial was helpful!

Membership!

The committee is delighted to announce that from Monday 27th May, you will officially be able to join the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild, Inc!

I’ll start with answering some questions that you might have!

What will be the benefits of joining the GWSMQG?

  • You will be able to be a part of this inspiring, friendly and creative group of people!
  • You will be eligible to attend any meeting of the GWSMQG
  • You will be eligible for member discounts for Guild events
  • You will eligible to participate in Guild challenges and group projects
  • You will become (as soon as it is possible – hopefully July 2013) a member of the global MQG and entitled to benefits as follows:
    • Access to the new (coming later this year!) MQG website.
      • This is going to include a social media hub which can be used at an individual, national and international level
      • You will able to easily communicate with other guilds and their members
      • You will be able to share photos, ask for advice from other members and find information about MQG challenges
    • Opportunities to participate in inter-guild member swaps and challenges
    • Discounted entry fees for MQG quilt shows
    • Priority and early bird registration, and discounted rates on conferences and events (if you are lucky enough to be able to travel to the US!)
    • Discounts and special offers with MQG sponsors
    • Membership cards
    • Official member blog button
    • Membership pin
    • 10% discount on online MQG merchandise purchases
    • {I take no responsibility for the MQG list of benefits – this is information provided by the MQG and may be subject to change}

Can I come to meetings if I am not a member?

  • We love meeting new people and welcome anybody interested in modern quilting to come and try out our meetings and see if you’d like to become a member.
  • For all new visitors in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area (including the Blue Mountains, full details in the Guild’s constitution), your first visit is free.
  • After that, you may attend 2 more meetings upon payment of the Visitor’s Fee (see below).
  • After those 3 meetings, you must join if you wish to attend any further meetings.
  • We also love meeting other quilters from outside Sydney and interstate! If you are visiting from outside of the Sydney area (licence to be provided as proof of address), you may attend any meeting, without being a member, upon payment of the Visitor’s Fee.

What do I receive when I join?

  • Upon payment of the joining fee and the annual membership fee, you will receive the following:
    • a magnetic name badge
    • a fabric pack to make your membership quilt block
    • a GWSMQG membership card
    • a copy of the GWSMQG constitution

Do I have to pay for anything else after I have paid my joining fee and membership fee?

  • Yes. The Sunday Sewalongs cannot be fully subsidised by the Guild, due to the high cost of hiring premises in Sydney. Also, not everybody can attend the Sunday Sewalongs, so in the interests of being equitable, it is necessary for those who do attend to wear the cost. The committee resolved, at our last committee meeting, to increase the charge for the Sunday Sewalong to $15 per person. The Guild will cover any shortfall between those attendance fees and the room hire charge.
  • For $15, you get 6 hours of sewing in a fully air-conditioned, private room, in a centrally located, licensed club. There is a bistro on the premises, and the staff are awesome – they will bring your coffee & cake and your lunch to your table whilst you sew (food and drink at your own cost). You are also able to bring your own lunch if you would prefer. The toilets are clean, there is plenty of parking and we think $15 is pretty good value for our Sunday Sewalong!

How do I join?

  • We don’t have a Guild bank account (yet), so all fees will be collected in person, in cash.
  • Please come along, in person, to one of our upcoming meetings, request a membership form, hand over your fees, and you’re in! We should have enough fabric packs to give you one instantly, and I will arrange for your name badge and membership card to be printed ASAP.
  • (The membership cards will be a little basic to start with, but may become a bit fancier once we have an idea of how many members we have).

What if I have already been coming to meetings and am not ‘new’? How does that work?

  • We want all of you who have been coming along to our meetings to join. We have enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing your modern quilting!
  • We would request that you please attend at least one meeting before the end of July and officially join the Guild by July 31.

Okay, how much is this going to cost?

  • The committee has set the 2013/14 annual Membership Fee at $50.00
  • All memberships accepted from Monday will last until 30 June 2014.
  • The committee has set the 2013/14 Joining Fee at $15.00
  • The committee has set the 2013/14 Visitor’s Fee at $10.00

If you have any questions, please ask! You can leave a comment below, email us at gwsmodernquiltguild@gmail.com or come along to a meeting and have a chat with us.

We think that you get a lot of benefits from joining. The MQG is going ahead in leaps and bounds and it will be thrilling to be a part of that global group as well as our small, local group. We are really excited that our Guild is making this next step. Please join in and be a part of it too!

It’s Official!

I am delighted to announce today that the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild has been granted registration as an Incorporated Association under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. Which is a fancy way of saying that we are now an official entity, with a constitution and rules and brand new office-bearers, elected by those present at the Monday Meetup on 22 April, 2013.

The inaugural office-bearers of the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild, Inc. are as follows:

President – Sheridan Powell
Vice-President – Lorena Uriarte
Secretary – Jenna Appleton
Treasurer – Sheridan Powell

We will be ready to start accepting membership fees at the very next meeting, on Monday 27 May, and that will be the basis for a separate post.

Once the founding members of the GWSMQG Inc. have joined and we have official membership underway, we will be seeking nominations for two more ordinary (ie non-office-bearing) members to join the committee. Caroline Gunn has kindly agreed to be nominated as our Challenge Officer, so that’s one nomination taken care of. Please come and see us at a meeting if you would like to be nominated as the other ordinary committee member. We welcome lots of involvement from all members and hope that everyone will step up in due course and take a role in leading the Guild.

If you aren’t already aware, we are hoping to be one of the first guilds to sign up to be an official member guild of the global Modern Quilt Guild from the 1st of July, and we are on track to achieve that.

Behind the scenes, my next job is to apply to the Australian Tax Office for not-for-profit status.  I have updated the ‘Upcoming Meetings’ on the side tab, and you might see Lorena and Jenna in here too from time to time. I apologise for not keeping this as up to date as I should have, but it’s never too late to start afresh.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in applying for registration as an Incorporated Association. It was a big job and your help was much appreciated!

Cheers
Sheridan

Monday Meetup!

It’s that time again! Our October Monday Meetup managed to sneak up on us! We’re meeting again on October 22nd at Dooley’s Waterview. You’ll find all of the details in the Events section of our Facebook group.

This month, our theme is my favourite pattern. We’re asking members to bring a long a pattern they love. It can be any pattern – something they’ve made, something they’d like to make, something in a book.  Any pattern that they’d like to talk about! We like to keep things open and see where the conversation takes us. Last month, it took us all the way to Europe as we talked about gorgeous thread. With the pattern theme in mind, we reached out to a few pattern designs in the hopes they could share one of their patterns with us. They went overboard each offering multiple prizes! Oh my!  We can’t thank our sponsors enough. We’ve intentionally reached out to independent designers this month to celebrate the personal side of quilting.  Don’t forget to visit their websites and let them know how much we appreciate their kindness.

It’s a whirlwind global tour at October’s Monday Meetup!   And we start off right here in NSW with Janelle Wind of the Janelle Wind Collection. Janelle’s style combines a mix of vintage and modern with a bit of whimsy.  We asked if she could spare one pattern, and then she donated four of her designs and a signed copy of her book!

Forest Hill is one of her latest designs,  a single bed quilt pattern with matching tree shaped cushion

And what little kiddo wouldn’t love her R is for Robot quilt and cushion pattern

Or you could make something for yourself with Thelma’s Day Out  bag and journal cover pattern

Or dress up your sewing room with the Sassy Sewing Set pattern including sewing machine cover and stitcher’s pouch. That pouch would come in handy at guild meetings!

And of course, her signed book, Pieces of Me which we’ll feature and offer as a prize next month!

Our next stop on the global pattern tour takes us to Colorado to see Penny of SewTakeAHike. Penny designs patterns independently at SewTakeAHike and collaboratively at Sew-Ichigo.  Penny is a gem who shares so many techniques and offers inspiration at her blog.

One lucky winner will get a Funky Peppermint table runner pdf which, I used one with some elephant fabric. It’s a modern playful design which would also look great in quilt, pillow or bag!

And from Sew-Ichigo, one winner will get the Latte to Go pattern which is shown below whipped into a to mug rug and gift certificate sleeve.

Which brings us over to Leila of Where the Orchids Grow. Leila is relatively new to the pattern design scene, but has graciously be sharing inspiration and tutorials on her blog. She’s go a wonderful quilt tutorial coming out this month as part of the Value QAL. She’s offered two winners their choice of any of her three patterns.

Home, Sweet, Home with her White Picket Fence pattern

Sit back and relax with a little Green Tea

And you’ll never want to lose your keys again, when you add this beauty, her Scrappy Leaf Key Fob pattern

If that isn’t enough incentive to visit us on Monday, I’m not sure what is?! Thank you so much to Janelle, Penny and Leila. Our jaws have dropped at your kindness.

Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild is an open organization and we welcome new members of all skill levels. Whether you’ve been doing patchwork for thirty years or haven’t braved your first quilt, we invite you to come along. Laugh, share and learn with us!

Member Spotlight – Caroline Gunn

Welcome Caroline Gunn to our Member Spotlight Series.  If you’ve been coming to our Monday meetings you might have already met Caroline who also blogs at www.hunnigirlquiltdesigns.blogspot.com.au.  (Read to the bottom to find out how you can be part of this fun series.)

1. How long would you say you’ve been quilting for and what was it that got you interested in quilting?

I would say officially I have been quilting since December 2010, but unofficially I did do a patchwork TAFE course back in the early 90’s and started a sampler quilt of sorts… No rotary cutters, just rulers, pencils and scissors.  I have always sewn for as long as I can remember, my Nan used to piece clothes at home.  She used to get paid by the seam and gave us bits and pieces to play with.  During the devestating floods in QLD I was blog hopping and found lots of blogs auctioning off goodies, whoever had the highest bid donated the money to the Red Cross Flood Appeal and you would receive the goods you won.  I won an Auction on Natalie Lymer’s blog www.cinderberrystitches.typepad.com, it was a full set of patterns and fabrics to make her “Tail Feathers” quilt.  If you’re not familiar with her work it has lots of sticheries in it.  Once I received the pack and started reading the pattern I thought…. MMMM I better find someone to show me what to do.  This is when I found Michelle Marvig’s shop in Penrith “Patchwork Heart” (Now Closed), with her help and encouragement the quilt was completed. And it was there, at her shop, that I can officially say….. I WAS HOOKED ON QUILTING!!

2. What was your first quilt and how do you think you’ve evolved as a quilter from that quilt?

With the anwser the first question in mind, my first unofficial quilt was a lovely lilac and pale orange number that sat in my Mum’s wardrobe unfinished until earlier this year.  Once Mum found out I was quilting again she kept nagging me to get it finished, so I snuck it out of the house and got it quilted and completed for Mother’s Day.  It has pride of place on Mum’s bed, but is so far from anything that I would do now.

The official first “Tail Feathers” quilt is also a style that my taste has changed from now.   I love it, and I’m glad I did it, but I don’t find myself drawn to this type of quilting with lots of sticheries as much.

There are so many blogs that I love to read and all the eye candy is Modern colours, fabrics and designs and these excite me and make me want to make it all. I am now drawn to more modern fabrics and patterns, although every now and then I will still find something traditional that I love too. Needless to say – everything is different now! My machine is better, my technique is better, the fabrics I’m using are better.

3. What are you working on right now?

I think the question should be what aren’t I working on right now! I am making a wall hanging with Anna Maria Horner’s feather pattern, bought some lovely fabrics and the “weekender bag” Amy Butler pattern, I’m up to block 4 on the 2012 Designer Mystery Block of the Month from the Fat Quarter shop, plus lots of other UFO’s around the place.

Probably the most important things that I also work on are quilts and laundry bags for “Aussie Hero Quilts”.  This is a wonderful project started by a lovely new friend Jan-Maree Ball.  She had a great idea to help a friend of her’s husband who is a soldier serving in Afghanistan serving during the winter months earlier in the year.  So at first Jan-Maree and her quilt group sent over 25 quilt & 15 laundry bags for this soldier and his mates. Thats when www.aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com.au  was created.  Word has spread throughout the soldiers and Australia (there are ladies involved from every state and territory) and to date 547 quilts and 578 laundry bags have been sent to Aussie Hero’s who are serving all over the Middle East.  Our target is 1000 by the end of the year.  If you get a chance, have a look at the blog it is very inspiring.  There are lots of pictures of soldiers with their quilts and lots and lots of thank you’s.

4. Tell us about your sewing machine(s)?

I have two machines.  One is a Janome memorycraft 10,000 – she is my back up, I have had her for about 10 years and is a beautiful machine.  Lots of machine embroidery has been done with her in the past, but I haven’t done too much of that for a while.  Last year I bought a Bernina 440QE and this is the one that I use to do most of my quilting, perfect stitching, easy to use.  The only thing I wish for is a bigger throat space for FMQ.  I am just learning and I find it a little frustrating rolling the quilt and getting a nice area to quilt.

5. Do you prefer hand quilting, machine quilting or sending it out?

I haven’t tried hand quilting yet, this is on my list of things to try.  I am learning to FMQ on my machine with books and on-line classes at the moment.  I haven’t done too much on my own quilts (beside Aussie Hero Qults), but eventually I envisage doing the quilting myself.  There just isn’t enough time in the day to practice practice practice.  The two large quilts that I have completed Wind Spirit (Michelle Marvig’s foundation pieced pattern that I showed at the 1st meeting) and Oh My Stars Quilt a Long were both quilted by a long arm quilter.  Wind Spirit was custom quilted and Oh My Stars was done with an all over panto design.  I have a lovely friend Carolynne from Honey Do Quilting who does my long arm quilting and she is base in Cranebrook near Penrith.  If anyone wants any details let me know and I will pass them on.

6. Do you sew on the dining table or do you have a dedicated space?

I am lucky enough to have a dedicated sewing room, although if you walk into my house you wouldn’t think I did.  There are fabrics and bits and pieces spread onto every surface sometimes.  My design wall is a removable one that hangs on a curtain rod opposite my kitchen bench so I can look at what I’m working on.  I have my Bernina in a drop in table and then tables all around so that when I quilt, so the quilt doens’t pull and lays flat.  The whole room is in desperate need of a make-over, but who has time to do that… only time for sewing.

7. Name three of your favourite fabric designers.

Wow only three is hard, my favourites change daily, as soon as I see something new “oooh that’s my favourito too.” I love Anna Maria Horner, all her ranges are lovely but I am loving Field Study.  I have a thing for Oranges and Teals so I picked out all of those to use in my feathers project.  I love the big prints because it can almost look like different fabrics once you cut and piece them.  I love Bonnie & Camille’s ranges, Vintage Modern is my particular favourite at the moment. I’ve made a lap quilt from this and my current Block of the Month is made from this range. At the moment I also really love “Birds and the Bees” by Tula Pink. I have purchased a full set of fat quarters. I couldn’t decide on one colour way so I got all three. I added to that the Amy Butler “weekender bag” pattern and that is the next project I am going to tackle. I have heard lots of stories about how hard this pattern can be… but I want to give it a try…. Stay tuned… Or listen for my screams. If you haven’t seen it already Elizabeth Hartman from “Oh Fransson” has done a lovely quilted version, here’s hoping mine will turn out just a nice. Here is the link for a look http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/09/quilted-weekender-bag.html.

8. Is there a fabric range out of the new season ranges that you’re drooling over?

I am really eager to see the release of Tula Pink’s new range “Salt Water”, since I love all of her ranges and I’m sure this is one that won’t disappoint.  I am building a nice little stash of her fabrics untill I can find a really interesting quilt pattern (or design one myself …ha ha) that will showcase some of her beautiful colour ranges and prints. I love the quirkyness of her prints.  Next on my purchase list is a copy of her new book “Quilts from the House of Tula Pink”.
