Sunday Sew Alongs are held monthly, as per dates on the blog and Facebook, from 10:00am to 4:00pm in the Function Room, to the right just at the entrance of the club. The club itself does not open until 11:00am, but press the buzzer outside the front door, and the fabulous staff at Dooley’s will let you in. A Sunday Sew Along is a chance to bring along some of your projects and work on them with other like minded modern quilters. Feel free to bring a machine if you wish! Cost is $15 for SydMQG members.
Dooley’s Waterview Club is a social club adjacent to parklands on the Parramatta River. Access is free for those who live outside a 5km radius of the venue. If you are within the 5km range, then membership is required but is a low $5.50/year or $11.00/4 years (for a financial year July – June). With membership, you are entitled to a 20% discount on food and beverages. It may be worthwhile to join if you plan on attending more than one meeting. Dooley’s serves a wide range of club food. You’re welcome to sit down and enjoy a lunch or dinner out with us while we meet.
If you live in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area (includes the Blue Mountains), the visitor’s fee is waived for your first visit. Second and third meetings incur a visitor fee of $10 [**Please note that room hire of $15 is always applicable**]. After 3 meetings you will be required to join the guild at a cost of $75 if you wish to attend further meetings

Do you know someone who quilts and wish you could do that? Or have you seen examples of beautiful quilts either in people’s homes or in exhibitions and want one of your own?
We are offering the opportunity for anyone to come to one of our Sydney Modern Quilt Guild Sew Days and be shown the basics of patchwork quilting in an informal and friendly way. Even better, it’s free of charge!
You do not need to have any prior experience of sewing to come along for the day. This class is designed for participants who have limited (or even no) experience of using a sewing machine, or for those who can sew but are new to quilting.
This session will be ran by Natalie Dolan, our events coordinator. Natalie taught herself how to quilt 3 years ago using YouTube videos and learning from lots of mistakes before joining the guild and being guided further from its members. There will also be other members of the guild on hand for anyone who could require extra assistance throughout the day.
In this class, Natalie will guide you through selecting the design for your quilt, precision cutting techniques using a quilting ruler and rotary cutter, preparing your fabrics and the best practises for arranging and sewing up the fabrics on your quilt.
The class will run from 11:00 until 3:00 on Sunday the 19th of April at Dooley’s Waterview Club in Silverwater.
What you need to bring:
* Sewing machine
– if you do not own a sewing machine, let us know as we should be able to find a friendly member who is willing to lend you one.
* A layer cake of fabric with 42 x 10” squares of quilting cotton
– These can be purchased from your local quilt/fabric store or you can purchase one on the day from our pop up shop hosted by Fabric Garden.
* Sewing machine thread.
* 2B pencil, or similar
Very useful but not essential:
- Fabric Scissors and/or snips
- Seam ripper
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- 1/4” sewing machine foot
